AI receptionist for Open Dental

An AI voice agent that answers every call, qualifies the caller and works your dormant list — with a native Open Dental route we activate for your account on request. No Zapier, no Make, no middleware anywhere in the booking path.

Why Open Dental businesses buy this

Open Dental practices tend to be the ones that chose their software deliberately — often to escape a legacy vendor — and they ask the sharpest question in this category: does the appointment land in the real schedule, or in a side calendar someone reconciles later? The honest answer is that writing into the real schedule is the entire point of a native route, and until yours is scoped we say plainly what works today.

The phone problem in a dental office is a timing problem. Calls spike at lunch and right after school hours, precisely when the desk is thinnest, and a U.S. receptionist runs about $37,000 a year before benefits and still cannot answer two calls at once. An AI receptionist picks up in about two rings, every time, including the 6:15 PM chipped-tooth call the answering machine used to eat.

Recall is the quiet revenue engine. Every Open Dental practice has an overdue-hygiene list; working it by phone is the job nobody has time for. Outbound recall campaigns — call the list, offer real slots, book the ones who answer, leave a message and move on for the rest — are included from the Growth plan ($60/mo) up.

Practices whose calls touch PHI should run on the Pro plan, where HIPAA and GDPR compliance live. We would rather say that on the integration page than have a practice discover it during a compliance review.

How you connect it

Authentication: Open Dental API — documented, permission-scoped API access enabled by the practice

Open Dental documents its API publicly and lets the practice control access with permission-scoped keys — which is the model we like, because it means your practice grants exactly the access the route needs and nothing else, and you can see and revoke it on your side. During onboarding we walk through the API setup page with you, confirm what your version supports, and agree on the scope before anything is enabled. Your patient data stays in Open Dental; nothing is mirrored into a shadow system, and there is no Zapier or Make step anywhere in the path.

Constraints worth knowing up front

  • Open Dental publishes its API documentation openly, but published documentation is not the same as a route verified against your practice — versions, hosting (local server vs. Open Dental’s hosted option) and enabled permissions differ per practice. This page therefore claims no live capability; scoping confirms what your installation supports.
  • API access is enabled practice-side, by you. That is a feature, not a hurdle: the practice stays in control of scope and revocation, and no credentials are ever parked with us outside your own connection record.
